Holly Jolly

by Megan McCullough |

With Thanksgiving officially behind us, we can start to look forward to the most wonderful time of the year, and no, we aren't talking about summer. Christmas is literally around the corner and we are still nursing our Black Friday bruises and sharpening up our elbows for Boxing Day shopping. As November comes to a close, more cities are starting to put up their Christmas lights displays, planning parades and planning the overall merriment, young and old alike. If you are looking to go find some of the best Christmas lights displays in the country this year, check out the few locations that we are dying to go see ourselves.

Smithsonian National Zoo

In the nation's capital, they know how to go all out when it comes to Christmas. The national zoo somehow combines a magical show of 500,000 lights with a bunch of nocturnal animals which is no easy feat. At this free event, families can take a spin on the solar-powered Speedwell Conservation Carousel, which features 58 custom-carved figures of animals including, a sloth bear and a clouded leopard.

Macy's at Center City

Since 1956, families have come from far and wide to marvel at the light show put on in this Philadelphia gem, and with more than 100,000 lights, it's no wonder why. This event comes packed with good memory making opportunities, including an incredible magic Christmas tree, ballerinas, reindeer, and even toy soldiers.

Zilker Park

After an estimated 15,000 hours that 1,500 volunteers put in, this Austin, Texas located trail of lights is up and running. For more than 50 years people have been able to come and explore this 1.25 mile long trek and see what Texas's capital has to offer when it comes to the holiday spirit. They never disappoint with more than 50 light displays, 100 lighted trees including the famed Zilker tree which stands at a whopping 155 ft. which makes it the largest man-made free-standing Christmas tree in the world.

Christmas brings out the best in all of us and seeing how creative people can get with their spirit is always one of the best things about this time of year. Try something new when it comes to your holidays this year and go make some memories in some new places. You won't regret it.
