Get Involved and Volunteer

by Megan McCullough |

Today it's hard to go onto social media or even turn on the T.V. without seeing some sort of negative situation happening, either in politics or to the world. Most people with a conscience try to find ways that they can help, either by reducing the impact, getting involved in rallying, campaigning or using their voices for the creatures and people who can't. What better way to give back than to volunteer? The following is a list of amazing places that you should check out if you are looking to give back and put a bit of positive karma back into the universe.

Safe Haven, Queensland, Australia

This wildlife sanctuary is primarily focused on the breeding of endangered species of wombats and wallabies, but they also rescue all types of ill, orphaned and injured animals. Some animals you will encounter during your time here are koalas, kangaroos, possums and cockatoos before they are released back into the wild. If bottle feeding joeys is a life-long dream of yours, this is the place you want to be.

Leatherback Turtle Conservation, Ostional, Costa Rica

This volunteering opportunity mainly takes place during the nesting season of the Leatherback Turtles and involves patrolling the beaches at night to protect the hatchlings from poachers. You will also be involved in taking down data on nesting females and also monitoring and constructing hatcheries for eggs. While you are there, you can also take the time to help clean up beaches and learning about erosion and how to prevent the destruction of our incredible beaches.

La Senda Verde Animal Refuge, Bolivia

This is the sanctuary that animals that have been involved in illegal trafficking get sent to once they have been rescued, providing a loving environment after going through traumatic experiences. LSV cares for hundreds of animals from birds to bears to monkeys, volunteers are expected to rotate through numerous animal care experiences over a course of a minimum of 14 days. You will learn so much about exotic animals, what's happening in the surrounding jungles and get you up close and personal with some animals who crave your love and attention.

There is no better feeling than feeling like you accomplished something good. Animals are innocents in this world and we should really be respecting them, their habitats and their needs more than what we do. We share this earth with them and should be taking care of them instead of destroying their homes and literally forcing species to extinction. Be the change you want to see in the world.
