Climate Change Needs Change

by Megan McCullough |

Climate change is something that we are starting to see more evidence of every day and it seems to be getting worse the longer we live on this planet. Catastrophic events like hurricanes, fires, volcanoes erupting and sinkholes are just some of the ways that this earth is trying to purge itself of mankind. Humans, in general, have not been kind to this planet. When people are using up fossil fuels, fracking, causing deforestation, and urbanization, it's no wonder that the planet has had enough of us. For those of us who don't see the almighty dollar and actually care to give future generations the chance to have clean air, water, and farmable land, the following is a list of things we can do to help slow it down.

  • Buy energy efficient products
  • Conserve energy at home and work
  • Plant trees
  • Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
  • Make smarter transportation choices (like riding a bike instead of driving)

Climate change can result from a number of things like a natural process in the climate system, for example, a change in the ocean circulation or changes in the sun's intensity or slow changes in the Earth's orbit around the sun. According to NASA and NOAA, the temperature has risen from 1.2 degrees Fahrenheit to 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1900 and the warmest temperatures have been recorded in the past 15 years. Most of the warming in recent years is probably due to human interference, other aspects of global warming have been affecting:

  • Rainfall patterns
  • Snow and ice cover
  • Sea level

There are things that can be done; we just need to come together. If there is going to be a habitable planet in 100 years it is going to be because we did a million small things to change the course. Americans alone, produce 21 tons of carbon on average per year which is four times the global average. Even making small changes in your home can reduce your carbon footprint a year, do research and find out how you can have a positive impact on the environment before it's too late. We only have one planet, there is no planet B.
